Using an SDF (signed distance field) sphere, this artist has brought the idea of revealing new worlds into three dimensions. By rendering two 'scenes' at once, but discarding all pixels outside of the SDF sphere, you can have two worlds side by side.
I'd like to explore this magic further with different shapes, such as the smoke forms I designed in Touchdesigner, see below:
Ghosts
The above visual experiment was made using Josef Pelz's T3D tools in Touchdesigner. Even on my fairly old macbook I'm able to achieve 60fps realtime volumetric fog dance around. It feels like sound could be represented beautifully with this method.
Visual representations of sound always fascinate me, and this game will be an opportunity to really dig into how I can push this in ways I've not done before. Having spent years performing as an audio-visual artist, and performing audio-reactive visuals for other artists at music festivals, I've seen first hand the impact of synchronisity.
One of my next experiments will be to combine the 'ghosts' above, with the colour mask shader concept.
